NEW MUSIC: Ludacris Challenges Double Standards With “Hey Ho”

Song title aside, Ludacris’ new jam “Hey Ho,” from his forthcoming Battle of the Sexes, is intended to support women by spotlighting how sexually active ladies are subjected to societel double standards. Luda tells Rap-Up that the song “tackles the double standard of men sleeping around and being called players and pimps, but when women do the same thing, they’re called hos.” If this is true, we wish he would have penned a song called “Yo, Bastard” to even out the score. Hear “Hey Ho” after the jump.

Ludacris ft. Lil Kim &Lil Fate – Hey Ho

Ludacris says the track is actually a sequel to his controversial single “Ho” released on his decade-old major label debut. The original song, which featured such lyrics as “can’t turn a ho into a housewife,” may not have warmed Luda to potential female fans. But “Hey Ho” suggests that the rapper’s views of sexually promiscuous women have changed over the last decade. Now, women should go out and act like hoes if they so choose, and shouldn’t be criticized for it!

The organ gives the club song a fun, carnival-like flair, and it’s nice to see Lil Kim back in the game instead of suffering through televised wardrobe malfunctions, but she does come off as disinterested (maybe because she’s been singing this song in her own way for years)? But we only wish Justin Bieber had returned the favor and guested on this song. Maybe when he’s 18 and isn’t under parental supervision.

Even if the song truly is about double standards, the meaning is lost with the repetition of the word “ho” over and over. Do you think any club goers shouting back the chorus are going to pick up on the subtleties of the verses? No, they’ll probably point to their female dance partners and scream “Hey, ho!” without any irony. Despite Luda’s best intentions to make the playing field equal to both sexes, we think the men are winning the battle so far.
