Man Allegedly Attempted to Hit Policeman With Car at Gas Pump

A west suburban Northlake man has been charged with repeatedly attempting to hit an officer with a car Sunday afternoon at a west suburban gas station after the officer "didn't move out of his way fast enough."

Juan Gutierrez-Cabrera, 28, of the 200 block of Maplewood, was arrested Sunday for attempting to hit Cook County Sheriff's Gang Investigator Terrance Ross with a car at 141 W. North. Ave. in Northlake, according to a sheriff's office release.

A Sam's Club is located at that address.

According to the release, Ross was fueling his vehicle at a "near-empty station" that had 24 gas pumps on Sunday about 3:45 p.m., the release said. The 14-year veteran was speaking with another gang investigator at a pump directly across from him, when the officer felt something behind him, the release said.

Gutierrez-Cabrera had allegedly sped up behind Ross, coming inches within striking his leg with his vehicle, a 2001 Buick Century, the release said.

Gutierrez-Cabrera proceeded to back up his car and again speed at Ross, stopping just short of striking him. The officer yelled at him to stop, identified himself as an officer and flashed his badge, body armor and police radio, the release said.

At that point, Gutierrez-Cabrera allegedly lunged his car forward, forcing Ross to quickly move to the side to avoid being hit, the release said. Gutierrez-Cabrera then turned his wheels toward the officer and accelerated toward him, which caused Ross to draw his weapon and order Gutierrez-Cabrera out of the car, according to the release.

Gutierrez-Cabrera was charged with misdemeanor assault of a peace officer as well as had his car towed, after police arranged transportation for Gutierrez-Cabrera' wife and children who were in the car at the time of the incident, the release said.

He was also cited for driving without a license and having no insurance, the release said.

Gutierrez-Cabrera said the officer "didn't move out of his way fast enough" which upset him, the release said.
He will appear in Maywood court on April 20.
