Out In The Cold

Out buying crack or freakin on the park bench? Hmmmmmm.

A Maple Park couple has been charged with endangering the life of a child after dropping their two children off in a Geneva neighborhood in subzero windchills while the parents were not immediately available, Geneva police said.

The charges allege the parents — Johnathan Meegan, 37, and Karen Meegan, 36, of the 40W000 block of Route 38, Maple Park — left their children, both under the age of 14, in an unfamiliar neighborhood at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 1 when the temperature was 9 degrees and the windchill was 3 degrees below zero. There was no shelter or means of contacting the parents for assistance for more than 15 minutes, police said. The charges are a misdemeanor.

The Meegans also each were issued warning notices for violation of Geneva's solicitation ordinance, police said.

Geneva police Cmdr. Julie Nash said the state Department of Children and Family Services was notified.
